Finding the AFPF NewsGroup

Congratulations !! You have found a very good place on Usenet, the afpf newsgroup, the very best !! If you have found us through a web based server such as www.google.com then you amy not know that you can have the news group delivered to your e-mail program, as a news server. Okay, we admit, not all ISPs serve all newsgroups. So, it's possible that if you attempt to locate and subscribe to alt.fifty-plus.friends that your ISP news server may return a message of something such as "unknown newsgroup." Well, we do exist, so it's an indication that you want to join? First, please post occasionally. Our purpose in having this website is so we can see faces of posters.

First, see if your ISP supplies our group, Alt.Fifty-Plus.Friends. Just click here to see if your ISP and newsreader are already set up. If you receive an error message that this news group is not supported, you may wish to suggest to your ISP to add us to the list. This request is usually granted. However, if you receive a technical error message, it may mean that your newsreader hasn't been configured yet. Most ISPs provide you with either Netscape Communicator or Outlook Express (sometimes accessed from Internet Explorer window as 'mail'.) Check your ISP's website for instructions to configure your newsreader.

Your next approach might be to use a web newsreader. David's favourite is http://newsone.net The advantage of a web newsreader is that you will find most all usenet groups here. The downside is that web newsreaders tend to be slower and have less functionality than newsreaders.

Finally, you may wish to experiment with some of the "free usenet servers" touted on the internet. In most cases, the access allowed is to read, but not post. To find such newsreaders, look for "free usenet servers" from your favorite search engine. This can be troublesome, however, as many servers listed are NOT free or public. To check via the AltaVista search engine, click here.
