Carlie

Royal Naval Reserve, 1963-1965 able seaman
Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, 1974-1981 active LT jg/LT
RCNR 1981 to age 50 inactive reserve as lieutenant

William (Bill) Becker
U.S. Naval Reserve, June '44 to July '46 active duty, came out as
Radioman 3/C. Missed going to Okinawa because
of broken wrist in early '45. Did interesting manuvers with Atlantic
Fleet in Caribbean in early '46, I was on a
destroyer that mostly did "plane guard" duty with USS Kearsarge
(carrier). Stayed in Active Reserve while attending college on
GI Bill in late '40s and switched to Army Reserve when I joined ROTC in college.
U.S. Army, active duty after college graduation in '50. Served in
Korea late in that conflict ('53) and that was the
closest I ever was to active combat. Did have a bomb dropped within a
100 yards of me one night by a nuisance night raider (Bed Check Charlie :-).
That was close enough ! Retired as Major, U.S.Army Signal Corps, 1968.

J D Cooper

U.S Navy 1966-1970. Left the service as Petty Officer 2nd class
(E5).

Don Erker
Indiana National Guard while in High School and upon Graduation
enlisted in the U.S. Navy for four years. Was in the Aviation Branch
flying in Anti-Submarine Patrol over the Atlantic as a ECM operator and
Radioman. Flew crew duty in P2V Neptunes and in Airships. Time frame was from 1955 to 1961.

Jim Everman
Anyway, I was in the US Navy 1961 - 1964, final discharge in 1967.
Made rank of E-5 - Petty Officer Second Class - as a Guided Missile
Technician (MT2/FT2).

After a year of school at Dam Neck, Va., I requested duty aboard a new
ship and was assigned to the USS Leahy, DLG 16 (Guided Missile Frigate)
that was being built in Bath, ME. I serviced Terrier missiles and the
associated nuclear warheads. I was also cross-trained as a guided
missile firecontrol technician. I also was the team leader
of the primary (five man) landing team (I carried/fired the BAR).

The Leahy (now decommisioned) was home ported in Boston for most of the
Cuban crisis, then moved to Charleston, SC. We normally spent two months
in home port, then two months in San Juan, PR. We made one six month
Mediterranean cruise.

No actual combat, but several patrols of "troubled locations", and one
aborted rescue mission to Brazil (where I decided shooting a BAR wasn't
really worth being shot at).
