In August of 1999 Richard suggested that we all draw names for Christmas. BJ volunteered to organize the Secret Santa drawing, and everyone submitted his or her name and snail-mail address to her. Fifty-one newsgroup members participated. BJ held the drawing in late September and sent an e-mail to everyone telling them whose name they had drawn. Participants were asked to buy a gift with a limit of $15 and mail it no later than December 2 with the giver's name on a card inside. On Christmas day everyone was to open his or her gift and then post to the group what was received and from whom.
